XEMICS' XE8301 strikes the ultra low-voltage microcontrollers' market

Neuchâtel, Switzerland and Mountain View, CA June 22, 1999

NEUCHATEL, Switzerland / July 22nd, 1999 - XEMICS has recently expanded its XE8000 8-bits low-power microcontrollers' series with the addition of its new ''general purpose low-voltage'' microcontroller, the XE8301. Operating on ultra low-power, low-voltage technology, the XE8301 reduces supply voltage levels to 1.2 volt. This innovation provides low cost solutions to applications like RF powered instruments, portable battery operated instruments, and data loggers, and perfectly supports the medical, industrial control and building automation markets.

Devised for lower battery requirements e.g (size, weight and cost), this 8-bits microcontroller operates on 1.2 to 5.5 V, and needs as little as 200 uA at 1 MIPS, a rate unbeatable by other conventional electronics. The XE8301 in HALT mode will maintain a real-time clock using only 1 uA. The XE8000 core is XEMICS's CoolRISC®, a revolutionary 8-bits processor with 22 bits wide instructions. Each instruction is executed in a one clock cycle; this includes multiply, conditional jump and 2's complement functions.

The XE8301 is a complete one-chip solution featuring crystal and RC oscillators, UART, counters (with 16 bits PWM and capture), 12 to 20 pins of PIO, pre-scaler down to 1 Hz, watchdog, power-on reset and supply level detection. The XE8301 additionaly comes with 512 bytes of RAM and 8k x 22 bits of ROM/MTP.

The on-chip Multiple Time Programmable (MTP) memory, facilitates on-site calibration and software updates. An MTP version of the XE8301, as part of the development and series production, can be obtained for applications operating between 2.4 and 5.5 V. A complete user-friendly development environment, including ANSI-C compiler, assembler, debugger, profiler and emulator is also available.

Remy Pache, VP Business Strategy Development commented that ''In this generation of microcontrollers, the XE8301 is a prime example of mastered craftsmanship that fully incorporates XEMICS' ultra low-power, low-voltage expertise…''. He continued ''professionals within the medical sector consider this a valuable component as it contributes significantly towards minimizing the cost, size and weight requirements needed by miniaturised battery operated devices, a good example of this are body worn patient monitoring systems. Together with XEMICS's XE1201 low-power RF transceiver, it is the complete solution for wireless patient monitoring.''

Development tools for the XE8000 series are now available. The XE8301 price is set at 2.10 US$ for 100k pieces in SO20 (packaging), and at 2.30 US$ with the MTP option. The XE8301 is also available in die form.
