XEMICS today celebrated its success as it won the Grand Prize for the Best of Sensors Expo Awards in Anaheim, CA

Neuchâtel, Switzerland and Mountain View, CA May 10, 2000

ANAHEIM, CA - The ZoomingADC™ by XEMICS ( MountainView, CA, + 650 - 428 - 0600, www.xemics.com), lets you ''zoom in '' on a portion of the signal, and apply the full resolution of the converter to it. Thus, the converter can compensate for large offsets on a small signal without saturation or resolution losses. A differential signal path allows the converter to capture both single and differential signals. It handles signal-ended signals by adding controlled offset.

The awards recognize innovative new products that will have strong impact in the sensing industry. Five winners were selected from 15 finalists by the editors of Sensors magazine, the leading publication in the sensors industry for over 16 years. The ceremony is co-sponsored by Sensors magazine and Advanstar Communications.

OTHER WINNERS:
The Smart Washer by Bokam Engineering (Santa Ana, CA, 714 513 2200, www. bokam.com) A solid stainless steel element with no moving parts, it looks like a conventional washer or standoff, but when it's inserted under the head of a bolt or fastner, its embedded strain-sensitive materials can detect force that the fastner exerts.

The ispPAC80 by Lattice Seminconductor (Hillsboro, OR, 503-268-8000, www.latticsemi.com) an insystem programmable filter hardware (software combination that allows the use of thousands of filters. You can configure it on the board using a PC or the embedded microprocessor, and once that's done, switch between 2 filters on the fly.

The Palm-SPEC by Ocean Optics (Dunedin, FL, 727-733-2447, www.oceanoptics.com) 6-inch x 4.5 inch spectrophotometer that interfaces with a palm-size PC.

The Passive Diamagnetic Levitation System (by SRI Internationl), marketed by Quadrant (Sunnyvale, CA, 8000-474-3589, www.quad-tech.com) Technology Corp. It enables passive transport, involving no friction and thus generates no particulates, and it can handle payloads up to 30lbs.

FINALISTS:

The single-chip, low-power ADS7870 DA, system by Burr - Brown ( Tuscon, AZ, +1 800- 548-6132, www.burr-brown.com).

The minature Bend Sensor from Flexpoint ( Midvale, UT, +1 801-568-5111, www.flexpoint.com), on thin plastic film.

The Electro/Coloumb/Magneto/Amperes v 5.1 CAD software enabling boundary-element design by Integrated Engineering Software (Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada, +1 204-632-5636, www.integrated.ca)

The Shape Tape 1D and 3D Fiber Optic Curvature Sensors by Measurand ( Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, 506-462-9119, www.measurand.com) track shape and motion of complex curves.

The hi-resolution MLX90427 IR micro-machined membrane thermopile by Melexis (Concord, NH, 603-223-2362, www.melexis.com).

The low-cost Ceramic Electrolytic Tilt Sensor by Naotron Inc. ( Phoenix, AZ, 602-453-9053, www.nanotronic.ca), which offers high resolution and incredibly fast recovery.

The COSTAR P-1 personal carbon monoxide alarm by the Quantam Group (San Diego, CA, 800-432-5599, www.qginc.com).

The Steam-in-Place Dissolved Oxgen Sensor by Rosemount Analytical (Irvine, CA, 949-863-1181, www.rauniloc.com), which maintains calibration for up to 50 steam cycles.

The Eyebot, a stand alone, self- learning machine-vision system by SIGHTech Vision Systems, Inc.. (San Jose, CA, 408-557-6773,www.sightech.com):

The Tire Pressure Measurement System by Tekscan Inc. (South Boston, MA, 617-464-4500, www. tekscan.com), which measures distribution patterns and force.
